YEAR 11 MOCK EXAM REVISION

Use this as a guide to help you revise for the mocks

It is VERY important that you read through the WHOLE exam paper before you start you are given 3 minutes to do this.

QUESTION 1:
During the exam you will be shown a sequence of a film from the disaster genre – this is used to test you skills of analysis and how well you know the conventions of the disaster genre.

To do well in this part of the exam you must be able to take good notes, so that you can then comment on how the micro features are used to create meaning in the scene. The sequence of film will be shown 3 times with space in-between to write down notes. The best way to get the best out of this time would be to follow these rules:

Use note paper to take notes on how the micro features are used, split the note paper into 4 sections, one section for each micro feature (cinematography, editing, mise-en-scene and sound).
  • Watch the clip the first time and don’t make any notes
  • The second time concentrate on just getting down denotation (say what you see and hear) BUT you can add connotations
  • You will be given 10 mins to write your notes before the clip plays again. Take a look at Question 1 again and add to your notes.
  • During the third viewing go back over your notes keeping in mind what you could write for question 1 and 2

This should allow you get a good set of notes down so that you can then write a good answer for Question 1. For help with micro features revision see revision booklet below pages 6-9.

QUESTION 2:
This will focus on the conventions of the Disaster genre you must be able to apply your knowledge of the Disaster genre to the clip of the film shown and other films we have viewed in class. This question could cover:
  • Characters and their relationships
  • Representation
  • Themes and Issues
  • Iconography
  • Use of settings
You will find help and revision notes on the above things in the revision booklet below (see pages 1-4 and 10-19)

QUESTION 3:
This will relate the distribution activities involved in the promotion of a film. Click this link for more on this Marketing Booklet and here. Also look at page 20 of revision book.

QUESTION 4:
This will involve some kind of creative response from you, I can only advise you on what has come up in the past, which has been:
  • Creating a DVD cover (make sure you know the conventions of a DVD cover)
  • Creating posters (make sure you know the conventions of a film poster)
  • Pitching a new idea for a Disaster film, so you would be best advised to come up with an idea for a Disaster film, the same way that you did for your own pitches (know the conventions, think of a director, stars and target audience)
You will be asked to discuss you creative choices. See pages 5 and 20 of revision book.

Take some time to revise key word you could use in the exam look at pages 21-24 of revision book.

Year 11 Homework: Due Wednesday 9th November

Complete this on your blogs

In order to identify a GENRE of film we need to be aware of the Codes and Conventions, the ingredients, blueprint, foundation features. These include:

  • SETTING
  • THEMES
  • CHARACTERS
  • PROPS OR ICONOGRAPHY (significant objects)
  • NARRATIVE AND PLOT (typical storyline)
  • STYLE (use of micro features)
  1. On your blog post 10 films that you think belong to the Disaster Genre, you can do this by using posters of the films and even trailers using YouTube
  2. Think about what all of the films you have chosen have in common. Use this commonality to write down what you think the Codes and Conventions of the Disaster Genre are. For example typical SETTINGS for Western films are frontier towns in the wild west.

    Due March 25th

You will be pitching your films to each other next Friday, remember your group films were for practice, your individual film pitch is coursework, and the Log Line and 200 word pitch is were the marks come from (it's marked out of 10).

    Friday 4 March 2011

The blogger of the week goes to HARRY BAGG for his work on his film pitch, and also for always being enthusiatic about film studies.

Film Review - I Am Number Four

When I went to see this film I knew nothing about it apart from that it was a science fiction film, I had not seen a trailer or read a single review, I had no expectations but I left the cinema expectant of the sequel! This film has no real stars to carry it, and hasn't been highly publicised or marketed, although the action is relegated to the last 45 minutes the narrative is strong enough to keep you intrigued and watching.

We see a far more mature and grown up Alex Pettyfer from Stormbreaker fame taking the lead role of John and ultimately number four and his love interest is played by Dianna Agron of Glee fame (but don't let that put you off). Kevin Durand who has previously been seen in Lost plays a humorous evil alien commander.

John is an extraordinary teen, masking his true identity and passing as a typical high school student to elude a deadly enemy seeking to destroy him. Three like him have already been killed ...he is Number Four.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film I liked the limited back story provided through the narrative allowing me to become intrigued and involved in John's plight. It could be compared to a sci-fi Twilight, but it has a bit more balls. The special effects are excellent, and if a film has the backing of producer Michael Bay it can't be all bad, right?

    HOMEWORK

    • Make sure you have completed the homework set before half term
    • Write a post on your blog with the title 'Film Production Cycle' - explain what the film production cycle is what happens during Pre-production? Production? Post-production? Distribution? Exhibition?
